The Art of Performance Storytelling

  • Norwalk Community College (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

A class for over-50 rising storytellers, those interested in learning how to craft and tell a compelling personal story. The process begins with writing the story down, then reading it aloud to hear what works and what doesn’t, rewriting, doing it all again, and most of all practicing. Provided with guidelines and examples, students will tell their 5-8 minute story in front of the class while being coached to find the true nuggets in the story, the best arc of the story, how to tighten it and bring it full circle, while having fun!

Six Mondays 1:10pm-2:50pm:  3/16, 3/23, 3/30, 4/6, 4/13, 4/20

Week 1: Introductions. Exploration of why participants want to learn how to tell a good story. Review of course guidelines. Analysis of what makes a good performance story: Examples of how good performance stories become better stories through the crafting. Homework: Find a topic and draft first effort (written).

Week 2:  Students share topic and first draft effort. Students are encouraged to share input for each others' stories. Facilitator provides constructive feedback, additional great story examples. Homework: Practice!

Weeks 3-5:  Students hone their stories by sharing practiced efforts with continued feedback from fellow students and facilitator. Homework: Practice!

Storytelling Live! Naughty and Nice in Literature & Life

Literature is supposed to help us develop a moral compass, but does it? Haven't you ever read about a misdeed, a naughty act, a crime and been tempted, tempted, tempted...? Did you do the deed? Then what? Literature itself is full of characters who were influenced by something they read; Raskolnikov, a host of Salinger's protagonists, even Tom Sawyer all made choices based on literary characters, and then, there were consequences. Recent psychological studies show that, in fact, reading literature does make us more empathetic, but what happens when you empathize with Richard III? What happens when literature and life co-mingle in life choices that tend more toward the naughty than the nice?

The Storytelling Circle, in collaboration with Write Yourself Free, present "8 True Tales Told in 8 Minutes" at the Westport Library!

Want to learn how? Join future workshops given by storyteller John O'Hern at 7 pm on Mondays: August 18, September 22, and a Telling on October 6.  FREE

Storytelling 101 @ Toquet Hall

“I couldn't believe what was happening, even while it was happening. I was white knuckling the steering wheel as I watched the policeman get out of his car and walk towards us. "You really don't have a driver’s license, do you?" my best college buddy asked. He had one hand on his door, ready to run at a moment’s notice. "No," I said, "I think I'm going to jail."
